Subway Chicken Is NOT 100% Chicken!

In 2014, Subway faced widespread backlash when it was revealed that the bread in their sandwiches contained a chemical commonly found in yoga mats and other rubbers.  Even though the company removed the “ingredient” from their food, they now face another “disaster”.  It has been found in recent lab tests that the chicken used in Subway sandwiches only contain 53.6% chicken DNA.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s Marketplace division enlisted researchers at Trent University’s Wildlife Forensic DNA Laboratory to test chicken from various fast food restaurants including Subway.

According to CDC:

“An unadulterated piece of chicken from the store should come in at 100 per cent chicken DNA.  Seasoning, marinating or processing meat would bring that number down, so fast food samples seasoned for taste wouldn’t be expected to hit that 100 per cent target.”

Every fast food restaurant except Subway tested close to 100% — at least 84% and above — according to researchers, who noted the percentage can decrease with added seasoning and spices.

“Subway’s results were such an outlier that the team decided to test them again, biopsying five new oven roasted chicken pieces, and five new orders of chicken strips.”

“Those results were averaged: the oven roasted chicken scored 53.6% chicken DNA, and the chicken strips were found to have just 42.8% chicken DNA. The majority of the remaining DNA? Soy.”

This is particularly disturbing because though soy has been touted as a “healthy” option, it is actually linked to a variety of health problems. “Thousands of studies link soy to malnutrition, digestive distress, immune system breakdown, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders and infertility — even cancer and heart disease,” the Huffington Post has explained, also noting that in the United States, at least, 90% of soy is genetically modified.

Subway questioned the results of the tests. According to a company statement:

“SUBWAY Canada cannot confirm the veracity of the results of the lab testing you had conducted. However, we are concerned by the alleged findings you cite with respect to the proportion of soy content.”

Claiming they recently tested their products and determined they were up to their standards, they added, “We will look into this again with our supplier to ensure that the chicken is meeting the high standard we set for all of our menu items and ingredients.”

According to Marketplace, the testing revealed other concerns:

“[O]nce the ingredients [were] factored in, the fast food chicken had about a quarter less protein than you would get in its home-cooked equivalent. And overall, the sodium levels were between seven and 10 times what they would be in a piece of unadulterated chicken.”

It took some time to get Subway to remove the “yoga mat ingredient” from their breads.  Now it is found that they are using GMO soy in their chicken.  With persistence we can help encourage Subway to further look into this issue and implement any and all corrections necessary to get the foods we enjoy back to being healthy and fresh. writes and shares information on Food, Government, Health, Humor, Life Skills, Photography, Technology, Travel, and so much more!  If you like my blogs and would like to see more content, then subscribe to this blog and like my facebook page, where I share more information daily!

Don’t Drink Water on a Plane!

If you’re on an airplane and the food cart comes by — should you order any drinks?

Some flight attendant have said to news sources, “Flight attendants will not drink hot water on the plane. They will not drink plain coffee, and they will not drink plain tea.”

An EPA study found that 1 in every 8 planes fails the agency’s standards for water safety.

Raw Carrots and Hormone Balancing

Raw Carrots and Hormone Balancing

Carrots, as do all root vegetables, contain antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial properties, which act as natural antiseptic and antibiotic agents in the bowel. Only difference is, these can be used every day for years without any harmful side effects.

The fiber in a raw carrot binds to excess estrogen, helping to safely remove it from the body. The carrot fiber also prevents the reabsorption of estrogen back into the small intestine. We can owe more cases of estrogen dominance to what is being described vs. the idea that the body is over producing estrogen, which is rarely ever the case. This is important because too much estrogen out of balance with progesterone can lead to array of unpleasant hormonal disruptions such as severe PMS, irregular cycles, endometriosis, PCOS, acne and weight gain.

Raw carrots and a healthy gut

The addition of a raw carrot to your daily routine can be a vital piece to the puzzle. Most GI issues will decrease blood flow in the intestine, which will increase the livers exposure to endotoxin and estrogen and lead to many unwanted side effects: headaches, PMS, bloating, constipation, thyroid problems, auto-immune issues and more.

The fiber in raw carrots bind to endotoxin and assist in normalizing gut bacteria. Gut bacteria is directly related to hormone regulation and is in fact where 20% of T4 is converted to T3, requiring an enzyme called intestinal sulfatase. Just so happens intestinal sulfatase comes from healthy gut bacteria. Studies have shown that endotoxin negatively effect thyroid metabolism.

Many people find that the daily use of a raw carrot eliminates their PMS, headaches, allergies, eliminates constipation, acne and bloating and other symptoms relating to hormonal imbalances. What is even more amazing is how quickly this can take place, but we will warn you – it might take a few days for your GI system to adapt to the raw carrot.

Not to be misleading, just like anything else, the raw carrot is not considered a magic pill but can be used very effectively along with a balanced diet. “More is better” is also a motto we strongly encourage you to reconsider. Although carrots are a great source of beta-carotene, the ability of the body to convert this to vitamin A is limited when thyroid function is less then optimal. Low thyroid function is intimately related with hormonal imbalances, meaning you cannot have one without the other. Additionally, the excess build up of beta-carotene in the tissues can lead to further interference of vitamin A conversion, place a toxic load on the thyroid and interfere with progesterone synthesis.

So if you notice you are turning into an Oompa Loompa, you may be overdoing it! Issues converting beta-carotene can result in orange calluses and under more extreme conditions, a yellowish-orange tint to the skin.

10 Ways the Avocado is Great for Your Health

10 Ways the Avocado

is Great for Your Health

  1. It feeds your brain.  The vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids in avocados will make sure your brain has the furl to keep running.
  2. It lowers bad cholesterol. A single cup of avocado gives you 32% of your daily recommended monounsaturated fat.  This is the good type of fat that can be known to lower bad cholesterol.
  3. It gives you more of what you need. The monounsaturated fat helps absorb vitamins A, D, E, and K into your body making sure that you get what your body needs.
  4. It dulls the pain of arthritis. Inflammation in your joints can eventually turn into arthritis.  Avocados have Polyhodroxylated Fatty Alocohols (PFAs), which actually reduces inflammation.
  5. It keeps your eyes shining. For your eyes to stay healthy, they need zeaxanthin and lutein.  Avocados are full of them!  These two carotenoids decrease your chances of eye disease and help keep damaging light waves from harming your vision.
  6. It’s fiber that’s tasty. Fiber is an essential part of your metabolic health which helps regulate weight.  With about 27% of the fiber you need each day in a single avocado and its ability to reduce blood sugar spikes; you have a delicious weapon in your weight loss arsenal.
  7. More weight loss benefits. In addition to fiber, the monounsaturated fatty acids in avocados are more likely to be consumed as slow burning energy instead of being stored as fat.  You’ll still feel full after eating the avocado, but without all the guilt.
  8. It’s good for your heart and muscles. Potassium is needed for proper heart function and muscle contraction.  A banana has 10% of your daily recommended intake of potassium whereas an avocado has 14%.  Most of us (I am totally guilty) don’t get enough potassium, so help yourself to an avocado.
  9. It helps while pregnant. Ok for this one it won’t help guys, but for gals whom are pregnant it will.  Folate is necessary for developing babies during pregnancy.  With almost 25% of your recommended daily intake of folate per cup of avocado, you can give your baby AND yourself the help you both need.
  10. Chock full of nutrients. Your body needs vitamin C to repair itself and B-6 to combat disease and infection.  Avocados contain both of these (25% of your daily vitamin C intake) and 18 other minerals and vitamins your body needs to stay healthy.

Bad Breath, Plaque, and Bacteria gone with one ingredient!

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic method for detox and rejuvenation. It’s a simple practice, with quite remarkable results. Many have heard of it, but never actually done it.

So what is oil pulling exactly?

To oil pull, simply swish about ½ to 1 full tablespoon of your choice of Coconut Oil (Preferrable USDA Certified Organic) in your mouth for up to 20 minutes.  Then spit it out in the trash or down the toilet, but never the sink! (the coconut oil can solidify thereby clogging your sink drain)  That’s it!  It’s that easy!  The best time to Oil Pull is first thing in the morning after you get out of bed and before you eat anything.

The process of oil pulling attracts and removes bacteria, toxins, and parasites that live in your mouth and lymph system.  Oil pulling will also pull congestion and mucus from your throat and loosens up your sinuses.  The oil binds with all these unwanted items and helps you to get rid of them.  It also helps to re-mineralize your teeth and strengthen your gums by thoroughly cleaning around your teeth, gums, etc.

Happy Pulling!

More Doctors are Now Warning to Stop Cooking with Aluminum Foil!

Admit it.  You, me, most of us have aluminum foil in the kitchen for cooking uses.  It’s easy, convenient, and it works.  But in this case what is easy and convenient isn’t necessarily what is healthy.  According to medical experts, the exposure to this heavy metal can cause long lasting adverse effects including mental decline, loss of balance, memory decline, coordination decline, etc. You know, the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

Numerous amounts of people are sill unaware of the fact that when aluminum foil is exposed to high temperatures, it will emit parts of the metal into the food, thus you will be consuming the heavy metal aluminum when you consume the food.  Dr. Essam Zubaidy, a chemical engineering researcher at the American University of Sharjah, has evaluated the effects of aluminum on cooking and found that a meal cooked in aluminum foil can include up to 400mg of aluminum.

This means that “The higher the temperature, the more the leaching, the more aluminum you consume via the food.  Foil is NOT suitable for cooking and is NOT suitable for using with vegetables like tomatoes, citrus juice or spices.”

According to the WHO (World Health Organization) the Recommended Daily Allowance for aluminum is limited to 60mg daily.  So cooking with aluminum can mean you have the potential of consuming up to 7 times the recommended daily allowance.

There’s some food for thought!

Synthetic vitamins in ‘fortified’ breakfast cereals harm Kids

Breakfast cereals that are “fortified” with synthetic imitations of vitamins like zinc, niacin, and vitamin A could be harming you kids, says a new report from the Environmental Working Group (EWG). Researchers from the consumer advocacy organization maintain that a lot of cereals, breakfast bars and other breakfast products marketed to kids contain excess levels of synthetic vitamins that may harm vital organs and immune function in the longer run.

The investigative report looked specifically at zink, niacin, and vitamin A additives, all of which are synthetically derived when added to breakfast cereals, to see how manufacturers use them. The team looked at nutrition labels for 1,556 breakfast cereals and 1,025 snack and energy bars to analyze their contents of vitamin A, zinc and niacin, and compare these levels to recommended daily values.

What they discovered was that 114 cereal brands were fortified with levels of either vitamin A, zinc or niacin, or all three, that EXCEED the recommended daily amounts for adults by 30 percent. As well as, 27 snack and energy bars were identified as having these same nutrients at levels 50 percent higher than the recommended daily amount.

Isolated, synthetic vitamins are harmful as they can disrupt proper absorption of nutrients.

The reason why this is a problem is that each of these key nutrients, when consumed in synthetic form, poses potential health risks. Too much synthetic vitamin A, for instance, can potentially cause liver damage, skeletal abnormalities, peeling skin, and/or hair loss. And too much synthetic zinc can block the absorption of bioavailable copper, which is necessary for proper immune function.

These same nutrients as found naturally in whole foods are completely harmless, of course. But when they are manufactured in a lab and injected into processed foods that have been stripped of their natural nutrient content like in commercial breakfast cereals, the effects can be quite different.

“Food producers often fortify foods with large amounts of vitamins and minerals to make their products APPEAR more nutritious so they will sell better,” explains the EWG report. “Fortified breakfast cereals are the number one source of excessive intake because all three nutrients are added to fortified foods in amounts calculated for adults, not children.”

Whole food vitamins, however, ARE safe to consume in high levels

Though the EWG report does not make a clear distinction between whole, food-based vitamins and the chemical imitators commonly added to processed foods, the evaluation clearly demonstrates that synthetic vitamins are the problem. Because they lack the necessary co-factors required for proper metabolism, synthetic vitamins tend to tax the body rather than feed it.

“Excessive exposure to fortified nutrients is the result of unscrupulous marketing, flawed nutrition labeling and outdated fortification policy,” adds the EWG report. “The current nutrition labeling system puts children’s health at risk and is in dire need of reform.”

You can read the full EWG report here:

Again, it is important to note that these findings pertain to synthetic vitamins as they are added back into over-processed foods, and NOT to whole foods that are naturally high in vitamins. The findings also do not pertain to whole-food-based vitamin supplements derived from actual food rather than synthetic chemicals.
